Croatian delicacies, family history and retrospection – the history of Hotel Alka

The Hotel Alka was built in 1972 by Ivo and Maria Sucic, after they had previously run the “Baracke” on the property next door for 7 years. The barrack is still a familiar name to many old Bietigheimers – young and old met here to get together, eat, celebrate and have fun.

In 1973, the hotel was opened and quickly became known beyond the city limits. Especially because of the delicious Croatian cuisine and specialities, these times will probably remain unforgotten in the city. After the death of the founder Ivo, his wife Maria ran the hotel until her daughter Henriette took over the family hotel in 2009 and brought in a breath of fresh air and a very personal touch.

What Alka means and what you may not have known yet

Ivan Sucic, founder and builder of the hotel, grew up in the area around Sinj, in Croatia, and was fascinated by the magic of the Alka – a jousting game based on a historical event that takes place annually in the Croatian town on the 1st weekend of August. In this event, participants, riding on horseback, have to aim their lance at the Alka – two concentric iron rings connected by three iron sticks. A large and popular event with many visitors.

When the hotel was built in Germany, it was to bear the name of this special event that the family associated with their homeland and loved so much.

Many hotel rooms in our family hotel are decorated with pictures of horses. The pictures are even painted by the hotel owner Henriette herself.

Personal details, love for the business, a fabulous team and a family environment – that is Hotel Alka. We look forward to your visit.
